The first silver dollar was the Flowing Hair dollar, so-called because the obverse shows a young Liberty figure with flowing hair. The Flowing Hair dollar was only produced for two years, making it highly collectible for its rarity and special status as the first US dollar coin. Strangely, the Flowing Hair dollar consisted of 90 percent silver, even though Congress had mandated a lesser amount. It was replaced in 1798 by the Draped Bust silver dollar, which adopted a more mature look for Liberty. Draped Bust silver dollars are dated through 1804, in what amounts to one of the more famous oddities in US coin history.
1804 dated dollars were actually struck in 1834, to be presented as gifts to foreign dignitaries. The US hadn't actually been producing silver dollars for thirty years, and therefore had to resurrect an older design. Strangely, there were silver dollars struck in 1804, but they had all been dated 1803 or 1802! Since they are so rare, US silver dollars dated 1804 are extraordinarily valuable. Production of the silver dollar in the US resumed in 1836. These dollars feature a Britannia-like seated Liberty figure. Although various smaller design changes were implemented, Seated Liberty remained a fixture on US silver dollars until the Morgan dollar debuted in 1878.
The Morgan silver dollar has become arguably the most popular collectible coin on the market. Featuring a left facing Liberty figure, the Morgan silver dollar appeared in 96 date and mint combinations, all of which are sought by collectors. The final US silver dollar was the Peace dollar produced between 1921 and 1928.
